美國總統川普發表的國家安全戰略報告稱中國大陸是競爭者，但根據美國國務卿提勒森的說法，雙方就北韓問題的會談非常深入，還談到北韓政府一旦垮台，美中該如何聯合因應。紐約時報引述美方官員說法指出，中方官員參加這種會談等於是打破多年來的禁忌。
美國國務卿提勒森上周表示，川普政府已向大陸領導階層保證，美國部隊在必要時進入北韓搜尋與解除核武後，一定會從北韓撤出。提勒森的這項談話當時並未引起太大注意。
